On Sunday evening for whatever reason, Doug Peterson declined to confirm that Jolen Hurts will begin his second career in Arizona next week.
He doesn’t really need to, though, does he?
Because we all have eyes.
Hurts, in the second second week, we all saw gave the Eagles an undeniable spark. No, we are not prepared to put Hurts in the cantonment or even name him the long-term owner Starter. After all, this is just a game. But it’s a good game. After four straight losses, the Hurts beat the Eagles in the NFL’s best defense and were one of the best overall teams in the conference. As Peterson reminded everyone a thousand times, Hertz did not own it. But he certainly played a key role in the 24-21 victory.
Of course Hertz is going to start next week.
“He played brilliantly today,” Miles Sanders said. “The tape shows itself. He’s very confident. He’s a natural leader. We needed it. He gave us that spark to start from last week.”
The final numbers did not scatter the earth to Hertz. He finished 167 yards and 17 of 30 passes per touchdown. But he ran 106 yards in 18 carries, including a few knees at the end.
Overall, 273 out of 413 in the Eagles’ attack yards were hertz. It was a good day.
On Sunday, Hertz seemed to raise the bar of the game for everyone around him. The offensive line played better, the recipients created the plays, the Miles Sanders dynamic, Peterson even called it a great game. If we simply praise Hurts for the success of others it may be unfair to Carson Vents, but it seems undeniable.
Although Peterson has been sidelined in praise of Hertz, the Saints head coach Sean Beyton is not.
“It felt like he played well. He played exceptionally well, ”Baden said. “He hurt us. We will see the tape. Obviously, we are not doing a good job of slowing down [his run game] Under. When a team runs 250 yards, a lot of good things don’t happen. I will say this – he was interesting to look at. He played with balance, threw some, I thought he was smart. He did a good job. ”
Sunday became the fifth Eagles quarterback to go 100 yards in Hurts owner history, and Mike Wick did it again in 2010.
Hurdles’ 106 Rushing Yards is the second-highest total the QB has won in his first season, following Lamar Jackson’s 119-yard performance in his first NFL start in 2018.
Hurts rushed for seven first falls on Sunday.
“I think he’s not only putting pressure on us as a safe in the run game, but also in the pass game, and his running ability is obvious,” Malcolm Jenkins said. “He adds another element to the grinding ability. You need 11 people to stop the flow. So they did a great job. Apparently he was able to take care of the look, the good runs, the passes, the football, without really hurting him, he hung up. Hello.”
Although Hertz did not put up a large number in the passing game, he did what he needed to do. Alshan Jeffrey was awarded the Touchdown pass in fourth place in his second quarter because Hurts was completely crushed by Quan Alexander.
He was able to stand there and deliver under pressure. This is an interesting play for anyone, let alone a rookie making his first NFL start.
“Oh man, you saw, he was handsome,” Jalan Recore said. “He’s a fearless guy like me. He is a winner. He knows how to play, and I’m proud of him. I am proud of him and I am glad to see where he is going. ”
We all know what’s next for the Hertz. He will be a starter in Arizona next week. He has at least earned it.
