PHILADELPHIA – Mets third baseman JD Davis came out of Tuesday’s game against the Phillies after being hit on the left by a quick ball from Chase Anderson, but the Mets hope he has avoided the worst. An x-ray of the game turned negative, leading to an initial diagnosis of contusion.
However, the Mets are still wary of a possible hairline fracture that will not appear on an x-ray. They plan to send Davis to additional tests on Wednesday, at which point they will receive a clearer picture of their condition.
“This is good news for the first x-ray,” manager Luis Rojas said Tuesday night. “We’ll check it out tomorrow.”
Davis was hitting in the second inning when Anderson’s 91 mph shot sailed in and up, hitting him directly in the left hand. He seemed to be in severe pain and left after a brief conversation with head coach Brian Chicklo. Luis Guillorme replaced Davis.
“You don’t like to see the guys you’re going to war with being hit like that,” his teammate Dominic Smith said. “Something is going on, it’s difficult. It is a strange place, hand, so many wounds can happen. So many bad things can happen. It’s something you don’t want to see, something I hope isn’t too big and can be recovered. “

The Mets named him his third baseman every day during spring training and started him at third baseman in each of the first two games of the season.
