The Jets released kicker Sergio Castillo on Tuesday after losing three field goal attempts in Sunday’s 40-3 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.
The writing was on the wall for Castillo when the Jets demanded that the Chase McLaughlin case reject the Jaguars’ resignations on Monday. Jets coach Adam Gase also said Sam Ficken could return from the injured reserve this week. Castillo had been replacing Ficken, who had a groin injury.
Castillo scored 6 for 7 on field goal attempts, with his only foul on a block, during his first stint as a Jets kicker. Ficken returned but then injured his groin again. Castillo resumed kicking duties, but struggled in the last three games. He made just 2 of 6 field goals and was 2 to 3 on extra points. On Sunday, he lost 37, 41 and 43 yards after making his first attempt from 45.
If McLaughlin threw the Jets this year, he would be the fourth Jets pitcher in the last two years and the sixth in the last four.
