In the work of Joaquim Sorolla there are a remarkable number of masterpieces dedicated to the disease and its palliatives, along with just over a dozen portraits of medical professionals. This interest is not explained only as something typical of an era in which the benefits of penicillin derivatives and other antibiotics were not yet available. It is necessary to take into account the diseases that afflicted members of the Sorolla family, especially the eldest daughter, Maria, who suffered from tuberculosis, so she was frequently surrounded by medical professionals.
