Joe Musgrove gets the first no-hit game in San Diego Padres history

San Diego Padres opener Joe Musgrove scored the first no-hit game in the organization’s history on Friday in the Texas Rangers’ 3-0 win.

Musgrove (2-0) beat 10 batters (four in sliders, four in curves, one sinker and one with changeup).

“It’s amazing to wear this uniform,” said Musgrove, who had never pitched a hit-free game at any level in his career. “Being the first in the history of the franchise, it’s amazing,” he added.

Musgrove, 28, retired the top 11 Rangers batters in order. He then dismissed Joey Gall and withdrew the next 16. He started the bottom of the ninth with 103 pitches, a worrying pitch count. However, nine releases later, Musgrove made history.

“There were like three different scenarios where I thought I had lost it,” he argued.

Musgrove, who grew up in El Cajon, California, about 15 miles from San Diego, is in his sixth Major League season. He previously pitched for Houston (2016-17) and Pittsburgh (2018-20) and had never pitched a full game in his previous 84 openings.

“I’m exhausted, man,” he stressed. “There was no way I would get out of this game,” he added. Musgrove threw 77 of his 112 strikeouts.

It was the first no-hit game in the majors this season and only the second full game.

Puerto Rican receiver Victor Caratini has caught the last two games without hits in MLB. The last receiver to do this was Ryan Hanigan in 2012-13, both by Homer Bailey.

Carlos Ruiz i Jason Varitek they share the Catchers record with most no-hit games (4).

The Parents have made history against the Rangers in the last two seasons. Last season, when the Parents became the first team to hit ‘grand slam’ in four consecutive games, all of these were against Texas (two in Arlington and two in San Diego, from 17 to 20 d ‘August).

According to ESPN data, Musgrove threw 62 turning throws, the most in a no-hit game since Edwin Jackson in 2010 (68). Jackson made 149 pitches in this game.
