Boris Johnson has said “there is nothing wrong with being woken up,” but has postponed on whether the term would apply to Joe Biden, after Labor Lisa Nandy said the U.S. president had won on a platform of progressive values.
The prime minister, who saw the inauguration on television in Downing Street, said Biden’s election was “a fantastic thing … for a country that has gone through a rough period,” in a codified critique of the Donald Trump administration.
Johnson also declined to answer questions about whether Biden saw him as a Trump clone and whether the UK should work to rebuild trust, as his predecessor Theresa May wrote on Wednesday.
“Obviously, it’s the job of all the prime ministers in the UK to have a close working relationship with the President of the United States, and in fact, when you look at what unites me and Joe Biden, there’s a fantastic joint agenda Johnson said in a statement. interview with Sky News.
“It’s great for America, for a country that has gone through a rough period and for us and for America, it’s a great moment, we have things we want to do together, we have to come back from Covid together.
“Supporting NATO, which Joe and I firmly believe in … and most importantly tackling climate change, is now really an opportunity for us. The UK was the first big country to bet on zero clean in 2050, since then many other countries, many very important economies, have followed suit, but not yet the U.S. Our hope is that this will be the big one, so that, in the face of Cop26, we can work as well. with the United States to achieve it ”.
In a previous interview with The Guardian, Lisa Nandy, the shadow foreign secretary, said Biden was an “awake boy” who had proudly defended trans rights and Black Lives Matter protesters while fixing the ‘economic recovery agenda. He also criticized the prime minister for adopting some of Trump’s cultural war tactics, including statues and trans issues.
Asked if he thought Biden was “awake,” Johnson said, “I can’t comment on that … there’s nothing wrong with being awake, but what I can tell you is that I think it’s very important. for everyone … I would definitely put myself in the category of people who believe it is important to maintain your history, your values, your traditions and the things you believe in. “
