Comedian Jon Stewart says he missed how “ridiculous” and “shameless” former President Donald Trump made him “dangerous” before the premiere of his new fortnightly playback program on Apple TV +.
Stewart is back in the spotlight for the first time right now since he left his role anchoring Comedy Central The daily show in 2015 after a 16-year blockbuster that made him a household name.
Stewart has kept a low profile since he left The Daily Show, undertake some creative projects and, from time to time, reappear The Late Show with his friend Stephen Colbert and pushing for benefits and health care for 9/11 first aid and firefighters on Capitol Hill, often alongside New York Sens Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter published Wednesday, Stewart explained what he did wrong when he dismissed Trump’s political possibilities and said at the time that Trump was a “gift from heaven” for comedians like him.
“What I was missing was that his certainty, his ridiculousness, his shamelessness is what made him dangerous. I thought he was turning him into a jester and I thought that would be what would disqualify him. What he did was be the perfect ship. be ashamed to do shameful things, “Stewart said at the outset, offering his version of how the tycoon and former reality TV star could gain so much allegiance between Republicans and his base MAGA even a year after his electoral defeat.
Stewart added that “the most dangerous figures are those who seem comical and absurd,” making it clear that while he didn’t compare Trump to those brutal dictators, “Saddam Hussein seems absurd. Crazy.”
Instead of returning to a nightly program on live television, Stewart adopts the streaming sphere with a new fortnightly political program, The problem with Jon Stewart, which will be released on September 30 on Apple TV +. It will also have an accompanying podcast, CNN Business reported.
While the show will have a humor component, the episodes will spend less time mocking politicians and instead delve into a political or social issue in each episode with the stories of people directly affected.
The premiere episode of The problem, Stewart said he will cover how many U.S. military veterans suffer from negative effects and health problems from being exposed to toxic burn pits while deployed overseas, an issue he has repeatedly championed as an activist.
“I felt like the experiences I had had The daily show combined with the experiences I had had in DC they enlightened me in a way that I may not have been aware of before, “Stewart told The Hollywood Reporter.” And it’s still just a TV show, but it surprised me so much how the most seemingly obvious and simple things were derailed by the systems that are put in place to make them effective. “
