Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart officially joined Twitter on Thursday and had some ideas about Reddit-inspired marketers that helped stimulate the meteoric rise GameStop stock price this week.
“This is brutality,” Stewart said in his first tweet. “Redditors don’t cheat, join a party that the privileged of Wall Street have enjoyed for years. Don’t close them … maybe ask them for a copyright infringement !!”
“We haven’t learned anything from 2008,” he added, referring to the Financial crisis of 2008.
Stewart’s comments seemed directed Robinhood online brokerage and other major trading platforms that temporarily banned trading on GameStop and other popular stocks that experienced huge rises this week. Although Robinhood reversed its decision on GameStop, it still received criticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, who plans to have audiences on the subject.
The financial drama attracted Stewart to Twitter. Less than a day after his first tweet, Stewart had gained more than 700,000 followers on the platform.
“Thank you for the warm welcome! I promise to use this app only sporadically and ineffectively,” Stewart said he tweeted.
“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert noticed and welcomed him.
“Well, one thing has changed since 2008: a friend of mine joined Twitter,” he said dit.
Stewart was a fan favorite for years as a host of the “Daily Show.” In recent years, he is known for his activism and pressure on Congress to extend the benefits to the first 9/11 attendees.
