ST. PETERSBURG, Florida, USA – Right-handed pitcher Jonathan Hernandez of the Texas Rangers underwent right elbow ligament reconstruction surgery Monday.
The surgery was performed less than two weeks after another Dominican Rangers reliever, José Leclerc, went to the operating room to perform the same procedure.
Also, the Texas bullpen doesn’t have at least until July from Matt Bush, a straight specialist.
Jo Daniels, president of Rangers sports operations, said Dr. Keith Meister was in charge of performing Tommy John surgery on Hernandez. He added that the surgery came out as planned.
Both Hernandez and Leclerc will be out of action at least until the start of the 2022 season. Meister said Leclerc’s surgery was performed on March 31.
Bush presents a stab to the right arm flexor and will receive an injection this Tuesday.
Hernandez, 24, stood out in the 2020 campaign, shortened to 60 duels by the pandemic, with a 5-1 record and an effectiveness of 2.90 in 27 appearances. He got 31 strikeouts and delivered eight tickets in 31 innings.
It has a sinker that averages 98 mph. But he was sidelined in the middle of the preseason by a ligament sprain, before deciding on surgery after an MRI taken the week before.
