Jones, Smith and Harris of Alabama lead 6 Tide AP All-Americans

Heisman Trophy finalists Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith have been selected for The Associated Press All-America, leading a contingent of five Alabama players on the first-team offensive.

Crimson Tide runner Najee Harris, attacking Alex Leatherwood and center-back Landon Dickerson are also first-team picks. Alabama’s No. 1 has been the first team since 1980, when the AP All-America team began having two wide receivers and two runners, to place a quarterback, runner and receiver on the first team.

Corner Patrick Surtain II gives Crimson Tide six first-team picks, most of the country. No. 4 Notre Dame, Alabama’s opponent in the University Football League this weekend, features two first-team Americans on offensive guard Aaron Banks and defender Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

Kyle Trask of Florida was selected second-team quarterback and Heisman teammate Trevor Lawrence of Clemson was the third-team quarterback of the AP teams released Monday. Lawrence, probably the first pick in the next NFL draft, turned AP All-America into his career for the first time.

Clemson’s No. 2, who will face Ohio State’s No. 3 in the PCP semifinals at the Sugar Bowl on Friday night, had only one other player selected for the American teams: Runner Travis Etienne turned the first team into every purpose player. The senior has been a second-team All-American for the past two seasons.

Wyatt Davis, the Ohio State Guard, is the only player to repeat as the first American of the first team after achieving it in 2020. Davis is one of the two Buckeyes of the first team along with cornerback Shaun Wade.
