Judges ask CSJ to demand repeal of reforms to the Judicial Career Act

During the meeting, the presiding magistrate López Jerez promised not to automatically dismiss judges and magistrates, and therefore will make an assessment of professional performance.

This morning the judicial table was set up to address the issue of the reforms to the Judicial Career Act, passed last week for the Legislative Assembly, which oblige judges and prosecutors to retire at 60 years or if they have 30 years of work.

The presiding magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, Óscar López Jerez, convened the table, in which there were representatives of judges and career magistrates, in which a solution or answer to the legislative decree that affects them would be looked for. .

López Jerez said that although the decree has not entered into force, as the Court is preparing for its possible execution, it will all depend on the final decision of the president, whether to veto or sanction the said decree.

During the meeting, López Jerez promised not to automatically dismiss judges and magistrates, and therefore will make an assessment of professional performance.

He also raised the proposal to give him 24 monthly salaries as compensation for judges in case they want to retire voluntarily. “For me, you deserve 24 salaries and not 12,” López Jerez told the judges and magistrates.

CSJ President Óscar López Jerez said he was unaware that “this legislative decree was coming” when referring to the reforms of the Judicial Career Law.

For her part, the magistrate of the Chamber of the Environment of San Salvador requested that the legislative decree be inapplicable by the Supreme Court of Justice for being considered indiscriminate and with unequal treatment.

One of the judges asked the 15 magistrates of the CSJ “don’t leave us alone”, this decree is not fair, it is not the right way to get 249 judges out, he claimed.

while A 63-year-old and 28-year-old judge demanded support from the Plenary Court in the face of offenses by officials of other state bodies against judges. “Assume a correct, dignified position towards us,” the official demanded.

Judge Héctor Bolaños asked the CSJ magistrates to make a public statement in support of judges over 60 years of age.

The judicial table is made up of representatives of judges and magistrates, who are elected in the so-called judicial conventions, members of the different unions of the Judicial Body among others.

The Judicial Table is defined as a liaison mechanism between the judges of the Republic and the Supreme Court of Justice, “in order to transfer to this highest court, the concerns, needs and problems they face due to work, making the respective proposed solutions, as well as addressing relevant issues affecting the administration of justice, always giving support and accompaniment to judges. It is important to note that the Board is a non-decision-making proposing body. , the latter corresponding to the Full Court “

This meeting is preceded by a series of peaceful protests by groups of judges who have rejected the reforms to the Judicial Career Law, which they consider an abuse and which is unfounded the main motivation for the reform expressed by official deputies, who has been made to purge the corrupt judicial system.

Even last Friday, judges said they are considering going to a partial shutdown if such reforms are not repealed.

Likewise lawyers in their personal social media accounts have criticized the Assembly for making these reforms, which is up to the Judiciary.
