Miami. Actor Julian Gil described as racist the new order issued by the city of Miami to erase the huge mural of the Puerto Rican flag that covers the restaurant “La Placeta”, of which he is one of the owners.
The performer, born in Argentina but raised in Puerto Rico, noted that they will continue to fight against this order, which he described as “racist action” against Puerto Ricans and Latinos, as reported this Wednesday by the Spanish channel Univision.
“The flag stays and we will fight it, of course we will,” the actor and businessman added.
The order issued this week is the second of its kind, after two years ago the city ordered that “La Placeta” had remove the paint from the giant flag that covered the three floors of the building where the restaurant is locatedOne of the owners is Puerto Rican chef José Mendín.
The dispute ended with an agreement in January 2020 that allowed homeowners to keep the mural on the premises, located in the historic MiMo district, where several modernist-style buildings stand and which is one of Miami’s architectural hallmarks.
The decision just over a year ago was hailed even by Miami Mayor Francis Suárez himself, “Puerto Ricans have suffered a lot and needed a victory like this. We did the right thing,” he noted.
The new order warns that if the mural is not removed, the owners may lose the restaurant’s operating license, inaugurated in 2018.
“The city of Miami and the MiMo district in the midst of the pandemic have nothing better to do than tell us again, after all we’ve been through, to take out our flag. That’s ridiculous. Maybe MiMo doesn’t deserve it. my flag here, ”chef Mendín noted on his Instagram account.
The mural, which cost about $ 25,000, was made by Puerto Rican visual artist Hector Collazo Hernandez.
