Michigan coach Juwan Howard allegedly threatened Maryland coach Mark Turgeon before he was sent off during the second half of Friday’s Big Ten quarterfinals.
Maryland told the conference that Howard told Turgeon, “I’ll kill you,” InsideMDSports.com reported, citing an unnamed source.
According to the report, no formal complaints were filed. Howard is not expected to be disciplined, meaning he will train Saturday in the semifinals against Ohio State.
The two coaches had to be separated by officers and other staff after a screaming match between the benches in the second half of the Wolverines ’79-66 victory.
Turgeon told reporters he preemptively called Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren to mock Michigan from his bench during two regular-season clashes.
When it happened again on Friday as Michigan crossed for the win, Turgeon said “it wouldn’t take the third game. And so I defended my team, I defended myself.”
He was charged with a technical foul but continued to coach the game, while Howard was sent off after scoring two technical fouls.
Hunter Dickinson, a freshman from Michigan, spoke in the garbage of the Maryland bench during a victory on New Year’s Eve, but the report indicates that Howard did the same instead of restricting his players.
“We have incredibly passionate coaches, incredibly passionate players, incredibly passionate fans,” Warren told Big Ten Network. “As with all these things, our office reviews it from the point of view of sports policy, which we did after the game. And there will be no other action. We believe that the officials treated him properly in court and spread the situation. “
It looked like Howard was gesturing toward the Maryland bench to start the failures, but later said he was trying to discuss a call with officers when Turgeon said, “Juwan, I won’t let you talk to me!” You won’t talk to me again! ”
Howard then told reporters, “I was raised by my grandmother and by Chicago. When a guy charges you, you go into defense mode … When he charged me, I reacted. “
