Kansas City Chiefs release Eric Fisher, the first pick in the No. 1 draft pick

The Chiefs have fielded Eric Fisher, a left-wing striker, and ended the former general team’s eight-year tenure at Kansas City.

The decision, announced on Thursday, will save the reigning AFC Chiefs champion some $ 12 million against the salary cap. Kansas City has also launched the first right-wing attack on Mitchell Schwartz.

Fisher, 30, was the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft and has been a fixture on the left side of Kansas City, protecting the blind side of Patrick Mahomes and helping the Chiefs reach the playoffs in seven of his eight seasons with the club.

On two Pro Bowler occasions, Fisher suffered a broken Achilles tendon in last season’s AFC championship game and did not play the Chiefs ’Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Schwartz, 31, missed most of last season with a back injury. The former All-Pro started 70 games for the Chiefs over the past five seasons.
