Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns when he was attacked awkwardly and appeared to suffer symptoms similar to a concussion on the field.
The Chiefs were able to defeat the Browns with some heroics from the final game of veteran support quarterback Chad Henne, but as the Chiefs turn their attention to the Buffalo Bills, who will host the AFC Championship, now there is a question that is above all others: will Patrick Muhammad be ready to play?
A first report by Jay Glazer of FOX provides a reason for optimism.
“Right now he’s on the concussion protocol,” Glazer told FOX Sunday night. “It simply came to our notice then [and] walking on it, that’s more important because they say it was almost like he was drowning, which I know a thing or two about. It’s not a concussion, but it still has to go through the concussion protocol. Still, he was trying to recover in this game, so there is a lot of confidence that he will be able to go there next week. “
This is good news for Muhammad and the chiefs. If Muhammad did not suffer a concussion or any other serious injury to his head or neck, all signs certainly seem to point to a quick return, in time for the third consecutive game of the AFC Championship.
After the match, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spared details, but also presented an optimistic tone about Muhammad’s immediate future.
“It’s actually going pretty well,” Reid said. “I just talked to him and he’s doing well. We’ll see how he is tomorrow, but he’s doing well now.”
