Where are we going from here?
Tekken 7 ended its fourth season of content this week with the release of Lidia Sobieska, who now has players wondering what the future of the fighting game will be.
One fan in particular decided to go to the source to try to find an answer to whether Tekken 7 or Soul Calibur 6 will receive additional DLC, and Katsuhiro Harada took the time to give them an answer about it.
Since he obviously won’t be announcing a Tekken 5 season on Twitter himself, the head of Bandai Namco is giving a pretty open answer to how they’ve been managing the game.
“Hi. First of all, our plan was to complete it in the second season, but it didn’t end in the second season (the whole market has changed to get used to playing the title longer than it was before”), Harada wrote on Twitter. “… So I don’t know about the future.”
Hello
First, our plan was to complete it in the second season, but it didn’t end in the second season (the whole market has changed to tend to play the title longer than it was before).
… So I don’t know about the future. Http://t.co/gCVi9flSSS– Katsuhiro Harada (@Harada_TEKKEN) March 27, 2021
With the release of Lydia a few days ago, it would be believable that a potential Season 5 would not yet be lit by the rises, although Harada has a safe game plan for either scenario.
Many felt from the start of the season 4 announcement that this last pass could be the last, as it featured fewer characters and content compared to the others, with only two fighters, stages and technically the code of updated network.
Whatever the next project of the Tekken team is almost certain to be a long way off in the development phase, especially considering the relatively small season 4, though it will all come down to when Bamco decides to pull this trigger.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are now available, so we’re completely open to the next generation of wrestling games to get on stage, even though so far there have only been ports.
Harada said specifically in the past that new hardware arrivals are perhaps the best opportunity to sell more fighting games, as most major developers have switched to launching just one new entry per console generation.
However, there is a good argument for continuing to support Tekken 7 with more content at the moment, as the game managed to reach 7 million copies sold with this last million, reaching in the last 6 months approximately.
People are still playing Tekken 7. People are still buying Tekken 7, so it would make sense for Bandai Namco to want to come out in the final season, such as Street Fighter 5.
Soul Calibur 6’s prospects of receiving a third season are less likely to happen for some reason.
Unlike Tekken and Dragon Ball FighterZ, Bandai Namco has never said exactly how much SC6 has managed to sell even two and a half years later, which is not exactly the most promising sign.
We are currently almost four months away from the release of Hwang as the last, without much talk about the game. Bandai Namco even said earlier that Hwang would be the last character before retracting this claim.
All of Bandai Namco’s major fighting games have nothing announced on the horizon, so we’re a little completely in the dark on whether the publisher is ready to move on or continue to support what’s there now.
It was specifically mentioned that Dragon Ball FighterZ was scheduled for balance updates this year, though they didn’t say anything about the content either.
This also relates a bit to other things Harada has talked about recently, including the difficulties of developing fighting games in the modern landscape and how he doesn’t think anyone can make a great fighting game for $ 10 million.
