Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) announced Thursday that state hospitals are approaching a “critical point” regarding the possibility of treating patients with COVID-19.
Beshear urged unvaccinated people in his state to receive the shot while explaining that hospitals are understaffed and reaching capacity, noting that the delta variant of the coronavirus “is burning our population,” according to The Associated Press.
“Our hospital capacity, really the capacity we have based on the staff we have, is reaching a critical point,” Beshear said during a press conference on Thursday. “At this rate, we will be out of hospital capacity very, very soon.
“I hope that seeing hospitals reach a point where they may not be able to help you if you are in a car accident or if you are damaged in some way, it will happen in some way and cause more people to have the vaccine that helps us protect us all, ”Beshear added.
The state reported more than 4,800 cases of coronavirus and nine deaths on Thursday. More than 1,700 Kentucky residents are hospitalized because of the virus, the AP reported.
Beshear also condemned the misinformation of the vaccines during the conference, and noted the messages circulating on social media questioning the masking and validity of the vaccine.
“One of the hardest things we face in our fight against this virus is that people post information that is falsely cheeky or sometimes intentionally lies,” he said.
