For Camilo Arbeláez, psychologist and CEO of Enterapia.co, Colombia’s online psychotherapy platform, fulfilling purposes has a huge impact on people’s self-esteem, because when a person does something to improve their way of life , is having a strong show of self-love and generating feelings of security stable over time.

However, what can Colombians do to achieve these goals and not die in the attempt? Arbeláez delivers the following recommendations:
- Write appointments in a place where we can easily track them. That is, on the mobile or in an agenda that we review permanently.
- Review each of the commitments in depth to determine if they are viable. It is crucial to determine that compliance depends on oneself and not on others or external circumstances.
- Engage our commitments with what we want to see of ourselves next year. For example: I want to take better care of my health next year. Then, there should be commitments that are geared toward working out a better diet or maintaining physical activity.
- Determine what specific activities are needed to achieve each commitment. What happens to us year after year is that we define general commitments, without clear activities to achieve them.
- Define a time for each activity related to each of the established commitments. For example: “I will jog every day from 7:00 am to 7:45 am.”
- Write down the positive consequences or benefits that would be obtained by fulfilling each of the purposes.

- Pose a maximum of 5 general commitments, as sometimes many purposes can become unattainable goals.
- It is ideal that there are commitments in all areas of life: On a personal, family, couple, social, academic, work, etc. level. At times we focus on a single area and this could be unbalanced for the functioning of our lives.
- Determine own incentives for the fulfillment of each one of the commitments. For example: if I manage to finish the finance course, I will go to my favorite restaurant and order the dish I like best.
- Involve other people in the commitments reached. The encouragement and recognition of those around us can generate additional motivation.
“When people do not fulfill their purposes, it is natural that they feel frustrated. The meaning of life is affected if we want something with a lot of longing and it is not achieved, knowing that it depended solely and exclusively on ourselves,” he adds. Arbeláez.
