Los Angeles Lakers winger Kyle Kuzma has agreed to a three-year, $ 40 million extension, including a player option before the 2023-2024 season, sources told ESPN.
Kuzma, 25, ended talks on his rookie extension Sunday.
In a rare novice contract extension with no maximum limit that includes a player option, the deal allows Kuzma to become an unrestricted free agent at his best at 28 years old. This is a benefit for Kuzma in case it exceeds its extension, which starts with the 2021-2022 season.
Kuzma is competing for a starting spot in the Lakers, who will begin defending their NBA title Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Staples Center.
In his first three seasons in the NBA with defending champions Lakers, Kuzma started 114 games and averaged 16 points. Kuzma was the No. 27 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
