Kyle Rudolph released by Vikings, 49ers could run him as a free agent

The Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday announced the release of Pro Bowl winger Kyle Rudolph. While the 49ers won’t have a lot of money to play in free agency, Rudolph is the type of player they could devote some of their resources to.

Last season San Francisco chased free agent TE Austin Hooper before signing what was then the most expensive final contract of all time with the Cleveland Browns. If you are still looking for an attractive TE option to combine with George Kittle, Rudolph makes a lot of sense.

At 31, Rudolph’s days as a main weapon are probably behind him. However, until last year, when he only caught one, he was still an efficient touchdown scorer. The five years prior to that he averaged six touchdown catchers per season.

The former second-round pick is still a weapon in the red zone smart enough to open up and physical enough to beat defenders in contested pitches. Being able to connect it as a step catcher would be a significant upgrade for San Francisco above Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner, who mostly block TEs.

San Francisco shouldn’t be willing to break Rudolph’s bench, and if a team offers him starting money, the 49ers will be left out of the race. On the other hand, if their market reaches something that can be afforded, the 49ers should absolutely be aiming to incorporate the double Bowl Pro.
