The nationals have a one-year deal with Kyle Schwarber awaiting a physicist, a source confirmed to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the deal.

Schwarber adds power to the lineup around Juan Soto, who the nationals have now tackled twice this offseason, with the addition of Josh Bell through the trade in late December.

Schwarber was not tendered by the Cubs this offseason after six seasons with the club.

With National League teams working under the assumption that there will be no universal designated hitter this year, Schwarber will play his normal left field position. This probably means that Soto will play the right pitch, his position to all the minors. Soto played on the left field in his debut, because Bryce Harper was the right player on the team, and he stayed in position when Harper left for the Phillies. Manager Dave Martinez started Soto on the right field for the first time in the Major in the last six games of the 2020 regular season.

Schwarber has -29 outings above the left field average since 2017, the second least busy just behind Matt Kemp (-32).
