Lamar Alexander: Trump must ‘put the country first’ and accept the election results

Alexander, who retires from the U.S. Senate after three terms, is one of the few Republicans in the mountains who have accepted the idea that Biden actually won the election. Trump declined to acknowledge, saying in an interview with Fox News on Sunday morning: “It’s not over. We’re moving forward. We’re moving forward.” In discussing the threats against election officials in various states, Alexander turned to history, the ability to transition power peacefully is one of the key features of a democracy. “As George Washington said when it was founded, the most important thing for our country, not the first election, but the second election, I think is a proper transfer of power. I think anything deviating from it is not good for our democracy,” he said. “I think anything deviating from that is not good for our democracy. People can make their own judgment on whether the president’s action is right or not.” Alexander, Trump’s other supporters, has refused to back down on the proliferation of cases and results from Trump’s campaign. “I don’t think his lawyers have the right to go to court with suspicious cases without any evidence,” Alexander said.
