India on Wednesday reported 275 deaths from coronavirus, the highest number of fatalities in a single day since Dec. 31, according to a count of CNN figures from the Indian Ministry of Health.
The country also reported 47,262 new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday, the highest one-day rise since Nov. 12, accounting for a total of 11,734,058 cases, including 160,441 deaths.
This happens when India marks one year since the first Covid-19 national closure was imposed on the country, forcing its 1.3 billion people inside.
New rules: In light of the “new rise in cases in some parts of the country,” the Interior Ministry (MHA) announced on Tuesday new Covid-19 control guidelines that will be in effect until the end of April.
India has reported more than 35,000 new cases daily for seven consecutive days, according to CNN data from the Ministry of Health. This rise follows a “sustained decline in the number of active cases, continuously for about 5 months,” according to the AMS order.
Some of the measures described in Tuesday’s order included rapid isolation of positive cases and follow-up of patient contacts with Covid-positive within 72 hours.
According to the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu accounted for 81% of new cases reported in the previous 24 hours. Parts of many of these states have imposed complete or partial blockages and nocturnal curfews in order to contain the spread of the virus.
India has distributed more than 50 million doses of vaccine since January 16, when it began vaccinating health and front-line workers, as well as those over 60 or over 45 with comorbidities. According to the Ministry of Health, all people aged 45 and over will be included in the launch from 1 April.
