Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi warned that if the international community leaves Afghanistan, this would lead to an economic collapse of the war-ravaged nation and serious consequences, the news agency reported. Qureshi’s comments came amid German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas’ visit to Islamabad, where the two ministers plan to discuss bilateral issues and regional situations. “The international community must remain committed. Humanitarian assistance must flow. Don’t let economic collapse occur in Afghanistan, ”Qureshi said.
He also urged the international community to remain vigilant about the role of spoilers in Afghanistan. He said the international community needed to “discern between peacekeepers and spoilers.”
The German foreign minister, however, said that if the Taliban made commitments to form an inclusive government, it remains to be seen whether they keep their promises. “It is important to us that all Afghans, even those who do not support the Taliban, feel represented by this government and it remains to be seen if the Taliban take this into account,” Maas said.
Qureshi said the recent Taliban statements on respect for human rights and international standards were encouraging.
Restart of charter flights
Maas also said Germany was preparing in close coordination with other nations to arrange charter flights in order to bring eligible Afghans to Germany once Hamid Karzai International Airport is back in operation.
Qureshi and Maas also spoke about the development of bilateral cooperation in various fields and regional peace and security, with a focus on Afghanistan. Qureshi also said that since Germany is one of Pakistan’s most important trading partners in the European Union, there were chances that trade could be boosted through the development of economic ties.
