Basketball great LeBron James is becoming a co-owner of the Boston Red Sox through his parent company, according to a report released Tuesday in The Boston Globe.
The Lakers star will join Fenway Sports Group as a partner, along with private investment group Redbird Capital Partners and James trading partner Maverick Carter, a source told the Globe.
James already had a stake in the English football team Liverpool Football Club, the majority owner of which is Fenway Sports Group. The new development would mean a deepening of their relationship.
The addition of new partners also indicates an interest in expanding Fenway Sports Group, led by billionaire John Henry, out of its current holdings, which include the NESN cable channel, a marketing arm, a real estate company and Roush Fenway Racing, along with the Red Sox and Liverpool. This could include the purchase of more equipment.
Both the Red Sox and Liverpool put an end to the long droughts of titles under the ownership of Fenway Sports Group, while James led the first championship in Cleveland with the Cavaliers.
