Leonardo Padura predicts a new migratory exodus to Cuba

The renowned Cuban writer Leonardo Padura Fonts predicts a new wave of migration in his country due to the current crisis and the lack of prospects for a short-term solution.

“With the recent situations that are being lived in Cuba, shortcomings of many kinds, a very complicated social tension, in which there are few ways that the situation of the country can be resolved in a short time, at the economic level, at the level social, at the political level, as we are anticipating that there is another wave of migration, ”he said.

The prestigious intellectual has called for “an open, comprehensive dialogue” to respond to the crisis on the island and ratified that current problems “must be resolved among Cubans,” but without imposing a absolute truth.

“These fundamentalisms scare me a lot,” he alleged.

The novelist, winner of the Princess of Asturias of Letters in 2015, is in Lisbon, Portugal, to participate in the Book Fair, in which he will present a re-edition in Portuguese of the first novels of his most famous creation: Detective Mario Conde.

In an interview with the agency EFE, Padura referred to his latest novel, ‘Like Dust in the Wind’, which deals with emigration.

This is a recurring theme in his work, as as a Cuban author he is aware that in his country there are many young people “who have been totally disenchanted with the Cuban process” and choose to make their living elsewhere. .

On the possibility of emigrating, the writer stressed that at present the doors have been closed to Cubans who want to settle elsewhere.

“In the case of Spain, she was quite generous in granting visas to Cubans and now at the moment there are practically none,” he said.

He, for his part, has stated on several occasions that he will not leave his homeland. “I need Cuba to write,” he reiterated.

The author of works such as ‘The Man Who Loved Dogs’, ‘Heretics’ or ‘The Novel of My Life’ has expressed that his novels “are from more radical documents that may have been written and said about this country. And that gives me a lot of peace of mind. “

After the July 11 protests, the creator of ‘Mario Conde’ commented that it was “obvious” that today’s Cuba “is not the country we have worked for, for what we have dreamed for, for which we have they have made so many sacrifices. “

“I think they were surprised by this demonstration because it wasn’t that in a queue they started shouting something, it’s that there were people in many parts of the country who came out to ask for things, to ask for freedom for example, and it’s very serious. when people shout for freedom, “he said.
