“We are waiting for the time of your retreat, people what they want is a respite (…) pick up and go killer.” So forceful is the letter of Let them go now, The new subject of Willy Chirino and the reguetoneros Lenier Table, the Micha (that sings rap the phrase), Miss Dayana, the Jackal and Osmani Garci’a. All of them have joined in this song that aspires to be part of the soundtrack of the July 11 protests in Cuba.
The popular singer premiered this Thursday the video in which the six artists appear dressed in a pristine and symbolic white that only breaks Chirino’s guitar, with the Cuban flag stamped, and Miss Dayana’s braid, with the colors of national education.
“These are the things of destiny. You can already see the light illuminating the path, this no longer has a way back, that goes, the people what they want is freedom,” they sing. The image of the musicians contrasts with those that alternate, in black and white, of Fidel Castro, Ernesto Che Guevara or Miguel Díaz-Canel and the repression of the anti-government marches that took place two months ago and left one dead for police shootings and more than 700 people detained.
“Let this relaxation end, let them go to hell,” continues the theme, which, as it progresses, moves towards a more optimistic tone until the end with the persistent return “what the people want is freedom “
“Let this relaxation end, let them go to hell,” continues the theme, which, as it progresses, moves towards a more optimistic tone until the end with the persistent return “what the people want is freedom “. The musicians end up making the gesture of drawing the L with their fingers with their hand, which has long since also become a symbol of the demands for freedom for the Cuban opposition.
The video has accumulated, eight hours after its release, almost 40,000 views and comes just two weeks after the song De Cuba sóc, by the reggaeton player Roberto Hidalgo Ponts, known as Yomil. The song and its video, by Yimit Ramírez, sowed controversy between officialdom for the use of images of historical figures, such as José Martí or Antonio Maceo, and artists such as Celia Cruz or Benny Moré.
Chirino, in fact, showed solidarity with Yomil a few days ago for the attacks received from the bureaucracy, emphasizing that he has the courage to oppose the authorities from within Cuba. “Another Cuban artist feeding the bonfire that was lit in Cuba on July 11 … Well done Yomil, especially because you did it while inside the prison island, knowing the risks that this entails,” he said.
The song follows in the footsteps of Homeland and Life, Released in February 2021 and turned into an anthem of the Cuban opposition. The theme, by Gent de Zona, Yotuel Romero and Descemer Bé with Maykel Castell Osorbo and El Funky premiered to pay tribute to the San Isidro Movement and has paved the way for others such as freedom, D’Emilio Estefan, o Freedom and Amen, D’Amaury Gutiérrez.
