In her first game since undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in her kidney in January, Caris LeVert made her Indiana Pacers debut with 13 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes in the victory. Saturday against the Phoenix Suns by 122-111.
LeVert admitted to feeling “heavy legs” as he struggled to regain air and conditioning, but said he was pleased with the results.
“About two months ago, I didn’t even know if I knew I was going to be ready to play so soon with everything that happened, so I definitely have to be thankful and happy to be back on track.” said LeVert.
The Pacers organization tried to make LeVert feel comfortable, especially in the emotional aspect.
He hadn’t played in an NBA contest since Jan. 12 as a member of the Brooklyn Nets, before being moved to Indiana. The small tumor in his left kidney was discovered during a physical and medical examination of the equipment before the exchange was completed.
In LeVert’s debut in Phoenix, the Pacers broke a two-game losing streak into a six-game losing streak in seven games. The two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis recorded a triple-double with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Indiana coach, Nate Bjorkgren, Said he felt LeVert’s presence was a boost for the team. After the match, when the base entered the locker room, his teammates celebrated his return with loud applause and support.
“Absolutely, he energized our team, and his level of character is very high,” Bjorkgren said. “He’s a good person. He’s been a great teammate all this time he’s been out, so our guys were very happy to have him back on track.”
Bjorkgren expects “much more” from LeVert in the future as he continues to adapt to the team.
For his part, LeVert said this was the second time he had participated in a 5-on-5 match since his terrible health experience.
“We have a tough group. We have great guys on the team and they were all in my direction throughout the game today, even before himself,” LeVert said. “I can’t thank these guys enough. The rest of the season will be special. We played a great game as a team,” he concluded.
