Senator Lindsey Graham (RS.C.), an avid Trump supporter who voted to acquit the former president during his second impeachment trial, joined lawmakers’ petitions for a 9/11-style commission in the siege of the Capitol on January 6 while it was “Fox News Sunday.”
Why it’s important: The impetus has been growing since last month by a bipartisan commission to investigate the lethal attack on the Capitol and is one of the latest ways Congress could try to hold Trump responsible for the violence, the New York Times reports.
What they say: “We need a 9/11 commission to find out what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again, and I want to make sure the Capitol footprint can be better defended next time,” Graham told Fox. He also made it clear Sunday that he believes the sentencing of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to Trump after his acquittal was a mistake and that he could chase Republicans back in 2022.

Note: Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La), who voted to condemn Trump for inciting the January 6 Capitol insurgency, expressed support for “a full investigation into what happened on January 6.” while on ABC Sunday’s “This Week” magazine.
- “Why were there no more law enforcement, the National Guard already mobilized, what was known, who knew, when they knew?” Cassidy said, adding that investigating these areas “forms the basis for this to never happen again in the future.”
- Cassidy added that he did not want January 6 to “define the future of the Republican party.”
