MINUTE TO MINUTE: In an atypical ceremony, with a strong military device to prevent riots such as those that occurred on January 6, Biden became the 46th president in American history this Wednesday.

Amid a strong police and military device in Washington City, this Wednesday Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States; a ceremony which for the first time in 150 years of history was not attended by the outgoing president. During his first speech Biden called for the unity of this nation and pledged to defend democracy.

And it is that four years after making great promises, President Trump was humiliated from power. He is the first president not to have attended the inauguration since 1869 and the only one to be tried twice during his term.

Biden comes to power at a time when the American nation is facing one of the toughest scenarios in terms of health, after becoming the first country in the world with the highest number of coronavirus infections.

The takeover of Biden goes down in history, moreover, for its strong security device: 25,000 soldiers of the National Guard have been distributed in the main streets of the city also surrounded by high fences. Traffic in the area has been blocked by both motorists and passers-by.

The ceremony is attended by only 1,000 guests, as opposed to the nearly 200,000 who have witnessed previous investitures. Among the guests are former Presidents Barack Obama George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, along with their respective wives, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton, as well as Mike Pence, outgoing vice president.

The speech in the nation is scheduled to last 20 to 30 minutes, and according to a source close to the president-elect this focuses on a vehement call for unity, the EFE news agency has advanced.

Trump who had maintained a confrontational attitude against the new president said in his last speech before leaving power that he would “pray” for the new Administration.

“This week, a new presidency is inaugurated and we pray for its success so that the United States remains a safe and prosperous place,” he noted.
