Oxford trial to test the effectiveness of the Covid vaccine mix for individuals
Volunteers are being sought for a first global trial to establish the effectiveness of giving people a first dose of a vaccine and a second dose of a different vaccine.
Trials have described the process, which is led by Oxford University and funded by the government’s vaccine working group, as “hugely important”.
It will recruit 820 people over the age of 50 who have not yet had a vaccine to receive a first dose of the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine or the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. Some people will get an alternative vaccine on a second appointment within 12 weeks and others will receive the same vaccine.
The Public Health England Vaccine Green Paper already explains to the NHS that, in exceptional circumstances, if people reach their second dose and the vaccine they originally had is not available, they can be given another:
