Duke lost his third straight game Saturday, falling to Louisville, 70-65, to fall to 5-5 the season, his worst start in more than 35 years. The game was close throughout the match and Duke missed three possible clearance shots or a draw in the last minute.
This caused an awkward moment with the media immediately afterwards.
During the post-game press conference of coach Mike Krzyzewski, a student reporter for the Duke newspaper, The Chronicle, asked Coach K a question, resulting in an exchange between the two.
“I’m curious to know what the next step forward for the team is,” the reporter asked.
“Yeah, why don’t we evaluate this game,” Krzyzewski said. “I am not in what is our next step right now. We just finished a very hard-fought match. I don’t know when … What is your career? “
The journalist did not answer immediately, so Krzyzewski asked again.
“What’s your major in Duke?” Coach K asked. When the reporter didn’t answer again, he asked, “What’s your toughest class?”
“Econ,” the journalist replied.
“Say you just did the toughest economic test in the world,” Krzyzewski said, “and when you came out, someone asked you,‘ What’s your next step? Do you see what I mean? Do you have some empathy? “
“Give us time to evaluate this game,” he continued, “and then we’ll find out, as we always try to do, what the next step will be. The next step, obviously, will be to prepare for Georgia Tech. How we prepare for them , this is what we will have to find out “.
