The Dominican right pitcher Luis Severino, of the New York Yankees, Spoke this Monday about the comments of today’s former President of the Seattle Mariners, Kevin Mather, that all baseball players must be bilingual and so he replied to the former manager:
I mean, I wish everyone would, but it’s not easy to get to a new country. “
This response was following the lawyer last night by the former also former CEO of the Mariners, who this afternoon was taken off the ship. Mather said the night before:
The most troubling comments were about how star prospect Julio Rodriguez and former Japanese pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma allegedly have or had difficulty speaking English, and Mather complained about the cost of paying a Japanese interpreter for Iwakuma. Rodriguez has already responded to Mather’s comments with a couple of pointed tweets.
While Mather repeatedly praised Rodriguez, Iwakuma and other players during the speech, his overall breakdown of the Seattle Roster brought more than a few awkward moments. For example, Mather continually referred to the receiver Luis Torrens as “Luis Torres.”
So good for Sevy (Severino), who also struggled to learn English since 2012 when he reached the Yankees Minor Leagues, although until 2013 he went to the US.
