TAMPA – Luke Voit caused a brief scare at the top of the Yankees ’third 6-1 victory over the Phillies at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida. After being scratched on Tuesday due to pain in his right knee, the DH tried to move into third place on Clint Frazier’s fly ball on the left, but was sent off by Andrew McCutchen. It seemed like leaving the field carefully, but it stayed in the game and it looked good to run out of a ground ball later.
“It feels great,” Aaron Boone said. “It’s not a very smart label from the second. I really just wanted to give it a try and felt like it felt good and said it felt good [afterwards]. We hope we have a better decision in the regular season.
Voit will not play Friday against the Tigers on a scheduled day off.
Although Giancarlo Stanton has looked good, Boone said there were still no plans to try him on the field, though he did not rule out the possibility.
“I don’t have anything on the calendar,” the manager said. “We want him to find his job and routine on the plate.”
Jay Bruce has now started games at first base, left field and right field and has impressed Boone everywhere.
“Right now, we’re seeing everything we could expect,” Boone said. “From the offensive side, however [also] with defensive versatility and what we believe is the ability to play first ”.
