Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, was announced as the new face of Marc Jacobs

Lourdes “Lola” Leon, daughter of pop icon Madonna, is the new face of The Marc Jacobs ’spring 2021 campaign.

The US label announced yesterday the alliance with the release of a handful of vibrant images from the filming of the accessory collection. In it, Leon is the dream of a maximalism: equipped with facing florals, knee-length multicolored socks and a lime green ascar handbag. The photos are a reimagining of Marc Jacobs ’previous, playful campaigns typical of the 1990s.

According to a brief statement from the brand, the shoot was inspired by “eclecticism and an individualized approach to personal style.”

Leon’s own style is equally strong and fanciful, though the 24-year-old singer and model maintains a reasonably low profile as she just created a public Instagram account this January.

Elaborating the decision to take advantage of Leon for the campaign, the statement also nodded with a “long story” between Madonna and Marc Jacobs.

Madonna has been a muse and friend of Marc Jacobs. In an interview with Vogue in 2008, Jacobs, then creative director of Louis Vuitton, called the Queen of Pop the “definitive performer.” He starred in two Louis Vuitton campaigns under his leadership and carried the eponymous Jacobs label on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar US in 2016.

Marc Jacobs ’new spring 2021 collection isn’t Leon’s first foray into fashion. In 2019 he debuted in a collection video of the spring range of Miu Miu. Since then, she has appeared in several street fashion collaborations, including Jean-Paul Gaultier x Supreme and Parade x Juicy Couture. This January, Leon co-directed and starred in a campaign video for a collection of Stella McCartney x Adidas capsules.

The decision to launch Leon marks a further step in the brand’s attempts to reach a younger market. In September 2020, to promote the launch of the new range of teenage Marc Jacobs, Heaven, the tag was posted on Instagram from a bedroom of teenagers full of posters, full of influential young people like Eileen Kelly, Lilah Summer and the Japanese YouTuber Kemio.
