MUMBAI: After two consecutive days of increase in new Covid-19 cases, the state and city saw a marginal drop in new detections. The decline in cases is likely to be due to fewer tests conducted over the weekend.

The state reported 4,666 new cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 64,593,939. Maharashtra has been reporting less than 5,000 cases in the past three days. Bombay reported 345 cases. The number of cases in the city now stands at 7,433,999. The deaths have remained stagnant in the state, but have fallen in the city. Maharashtra reported 131 deaths rising from the figure to 1.37.157. Bombay on Sunday reported two fatalities in Covid. For almost a month, the city has reported deaths in Covid in a single digit. The accumulated Covid toll in Bombay has reached 15,974. Both of the deceased on Sunday were elderly and had comorbidities.
Warning that Maharashtra could see an outbreak in post-holiday cases as Kerala has done, public health Rajesh Tope said he called for caution in the districts, especially after the Center advised a night curfew before the holiday season like Gauri -Ganpati, Dussehra and Diwali. “In light of the rise of Covid seen in Kerala after Onam, the Center has recommended the night curfew for Maharashtra as well. Pune district has the highest number of active cases (13,503), followed by Satara (5,515), Ahmednagar (5,168) and Sangli (4,712). The Pune circle had the highest fatalities: 61 on Sunday, followed by 38 in the Kolhapur circle and 14 in the Nashik circle. The Mumbai metropolitan region recorded 11 deaths.
