Man accused of accessory to murder of 3-year-old Charlotte girl

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Police have reported to a man an accessory related to the deadly shooting of a 3-year-old boy when more than 150 shots were fired at the sleeping Charlotte’s home on Sept. 8.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested 21-year-old Qua’tonio Stephens. He was accused of accessory after the murder in connection with the shooting of Asiah Figueroa.

Police made a traffic stop in a vehicle driven by Stephens on Sept. 8. He was arrested without incident on I-85 near Glenwood Drive.

He faces a series of crimes such as fleeing to evade, unloading properties occupied by weapons (three charges) and assaulting with a deadly weapon with intent to kill (seven charges) in connection with a September 7 incident in Joe Morrison Lane.

Susie Whitley, the boy’s great-grandmother, said Asiah Figueroa, three, was the victim of Tuesday night’s deadly shooting at Richard Rozzelle Drive.

Asiah’s 4-year-old sister was grazed in the shooting and was expected to survive.

“How can you wake up this morning knowing that your actions last night ended the life of a 3-year-old boy, who will never have a chance to grow up and play, like you’ve had?” CMPD chief Johnny Jennings said, speaking directly with the suspects the day after the shooting.

Detectives believe this is an incident in a series of shootings related to two homicides and have something to do with students at Hopewell, North Mecklenburg and Chambers High Schools.

According to officers, several vehicles drove the house.
