The victim was identified as 26-year-old Evan Thomas Silva.
Three parked cars and the garage where the baby shower was held were also hit by shrapnel, according to the report.
Michigan police said it was suspected that gunpowder placed in the device caused the barrel to fracture.
The owner of the cannon had acquired it at auction and had already been fired several times before the explosion.
Authorities did not provide further details of the case, but an investigation is underway.
