Man involved in deadly shooting in northern Houston shot by officer responding to scene, according to police

HOUSTON – A Houston police officer shot a gunman Monday after the man shot and killed a person and brandished a gun in a store, police said.

The shooting was reported about 2:20 p.m. near the intersection of 43rd Main and East 43rd streets.

According to Houston Police Deputy Chief of Staff Troy Finner, the man shot and killed a person at 8500 block of North Main Street before entering a nearby convenience store and brandishing his weapon.

Finner said an agent responded to the scene and the man began firing at the agent. He said the officer returned fire and hit the gunman. He said the officer was not injured and the man was taken to a hospital for treatment. He said the man was in critical condition.

Finner said investigators are trying to determine if the man knew the person who was shot dead.

The man who was killed by the agent has not yet been identified.

Finner said the officer involved in the shooting has been assigned to administrative duties, which is a common practice.
