MADRID – Manchester City are closely following the situation of Sergio Ramos in the face of trying to sign him as a free agent this summer, which different sources have confirmed to ESPN.
The Madrid captain has been free to negotiate with other clubs since January 1 as his contract with the white club ends on June 30 and remains unrenewed.
City knows that the operation will be very complicated but wants to strengthen the defense for next season and, as ESPN has learned, the option of the veteran Spanish footballer is very much liked by Pep Guardiola.
Ramos will turn 35 in March but in Manchester they believe his performance is still optimal and consider it to be an “interesting” operation for a defender who continues to miss an experienced benchmark since Vincent Kompany left.
Guardiola has four young central defenders such as Ruben Dies (23 years old), Nathan Ake (25), John Stones (26) and Aymeric Laporte (26) but at the English club they consider the leadership and international experience of a footballer as Ramos would be welcome for a team that still dreams of being able to win their first Champions League.
In addition, the same sources slide that the City would have no problem facing the Rams card given that it would come at zero cost.
One way or another, Rams’ first option is still to renew his contract with Madrid.
Talks between the white captain and the club began after the summer and the predisposition of both parties is good. Ramos wants to renew for two more years and Madrid agrees on this duration but negotiations are being slower than expected due to the situation of the Covid-19 and, above all, to the repercussions it has had the pandemic in the coffers of the white club.
In Manchester they know that the operation is complicated because they understand that it is normal for Ramos to end up renewing but they want to be well positioned in case the negotiations get bogged down and a real possibility arises that the captain will leave the Santiago Bernabéu.
