Mandatory evacuations to Connecticut areas in preparation for Henry – NBC Connecticut

Residents of several coastal towns and villages are being told to evacuate their homes due to a hurricane warning that was issued before Henry’s arrival.

Henri has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane as he continues on his way to Connecticut.

There is a hurricane warning in New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties.

Branford

Residents in evacuation zones 1 and 2 along the coast, in low-lying areas and those who are prone to flooding will be required to evacuate their homes no later than 7 a.m. Sunday.

Officials said if you live outside the designated areas, but your home is prone to flooding, you should prepare to evacuate.

“Any resident who does not leave the evacuation area before 7 a.m. Sunday puts his life at risk. Public safety crews may not be able to respond to help once winds exceed 50 mph.” said the Branford City Emergency Operations Center.

  • Jupiter Lake Road

On Friday, the city of Groton recommended that residents living on the previous streets be evacuated during the storm. Now, evacuation is mandatory.

Guilford

There is a mandatory evacuation for residents living in coastal and / or low-lying areas. Other areas prone to flooding due to storm surges should also be evacuated immediately.

Mandatory evacuation is effective because the city cannot ensure that emergency personnel can reach you if you need help, officials said.

Anyone who needs a place to stay is welcome at 32 Church St., which accepts residents until midnight. The shelter will also accept residents from 6 a.m. Sunday. Masks are required and people are asked to bring their own toiletries, bed linen, sleepwear and non-perishable food. Cots will be available. Pets taken to the shelter must be in a luggage rack.

“I encourage all residents living in the affected areas to take this evacuation order seriously, for their own safety and that of our first responders,” first coach Matt Hoey said.

Madison

The city of Madison has issued a mandatory evacuation order for all residents south of the Boston Post Highway before Hurricane Henri hit land.

Messages were sent to all affected residents on Saturday.

Everyone in the evacuation zone will have to be out of the area by 9pm on Saturday night, according to city officials in Madison.

The order was given because of Henri’s concerns about storm surges and major coastal floods.

“Any resident who does not leave the evacuation area before 9pm tonight puts his life at risk and public safety teams will not be able to answer you when the winds exceed 50 MPH,” said one message on the Madison City website.

City leaders are asking anyone who lives outside the evacuation zone, but has experienced flooding during previous storms, to be prepared to evacuate if conditions change.

Madison opens an emergency shelter at the Campus Town gym at 8 a.m. on Campus Drive at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter can accommodate pets if needed.
