One of TikTok’s most prominent families allegedly fell victim to hackers and was left out of their accounts, which have tens of millions of followers.
On December 13, hackers appeared to take control of Dixie D’Amelio’s TikTok account. With 46.4 million followers at the time of writing, Amelio’s older sister is one of the most followed people on the app.
Before his account was completely deleted on December 14, some of his followers captured photos and video screen recordings that the alleged hackers posted to his account. Before TikTok took action and deactivated the account, the alleged hacker was also posted and connected his own Instagram account, @koiiddd.
In one post, the alleged hackers mentioned the Chuckling Squad, an infamous hacker group that has infiltrated profiles of celebrities such as Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, youtuber Shane Dawson and makeup guru James Charles Una another post mentioned the Instagram account @lucifer, who, according to Insider, claimed that the Chucking Squad was behind the hack.
“You just have to know that the ‘laughing group’ is back,” the user behind @lucifer told Insider while threatening that more hackers were imminent. “[This] it will be a daily recidivism [sic]”.
Nor was Dixie the only member of his family apparently hacked. Shortly after disabling her profile, her father Marc’s TikTok account also started posting weird videos that referenced her Instagram account @lucifer. Both Dixie and Marc have regained access to their accounts.
The D’Amelio family is not yet out of the woods. During an Instagram Live on Dec. 14, Dixie’s sister Charli, who has 103 million followers on TikTok, most of anyone in the app, revealed that she’s currently out of her account, just as a measure of security.
“With all the hacking that has taken place lately, I currently don’t have access to my TikTok account just because TikTok has blocked everyone from my account,” he explained. “That way nothing would happen to my family’s TikTok accounts anymore.”
So far, Charli’s account has not been hacked, but given what has happened to her family, it is possible that the Chuckling Squad will come looking for her.
