Matthew McConaughey has once again shared his thoughts on the two extreme sides of the political divide, this time during an interview with British broadcaster ITV’s “Good Morning Britain”.
The “Dallas Buyers Club” star last week noted that Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential victory had the left in denial, just as some Republicans are now skeptical about Joe Biden’s victory. He was speaking as part of an episode of Russell Brand’s podcast.
Appearing practically on Tuesday morning’s program, McConaughey said, “You need liberals. What I don’t think we need are the liberals, and what I don’t think some liberals see is that the liberals often cannibalize them. “
“Now, you know, there are extremes on both sides that I think are unfair, that I don’t think are the right place to be,” McConaughey told show hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid. “The far left and the far right completely illegitimate the other side, or exaggerate the position of this side in an irrational state. That doesn’t make sense. “
McConaughey noted that “it’s not fair” when either party does.
“Where the waterline will reach this freedom of expression, what we allow and what not and where this culture of cancellation goes … is a very interesting place where we are committed right now as a society to try to find out “Because we haven’t found the right place,” the actor continued.
When Morgan suggested that British politics has become “so tribal now that consensus is buried in the mix,” McConaughey replied, “There is no room for any consensus. You have to have a confrontation to have unity, “I think we can all agree. That’s when democracy works very well.”
“I would say we don’t have a real confrontation right now,” McConaughey added. “And that means, in a way, it’s a little unconstitutional.”
McConaughey promoted his “Greenlights” memoirs, in which he revealed that he was a victim of sexual abuse during his adolescence.
