The outgoing mayor of Ponce, Maria ‘Mayita’ Meléndez, reportedly resigned last week, leaving the post vacant days before the arrival of a new municipal executive.
In a letter revealed by the media News of Ponce and dated December 21, the mayor reported that the Municipal Code should be implemented on an Interim Succession of the Mayor in Permanent Vacancy because he was leaving the place.
Meléndez is said to have appointed Yolanda Cruz Medina as interim mayor of Ponce, who, if so, has been in office since December 21 and will do so until January 10, 2021.
Previously Creu Medina was director of the Office of Finance and Budget of the Municipality.
The mayor has not yet made official statements confirming her resignation.
Meléndez lost the last election on the night of the event that overwhelmingly favored his opponent in the Popular Party, Luis Irizarry Pabón.
With 92.07% reported from the general ballot, Meléndez had 10,833 votes in favor compared to the 27,595 that Irizarry Pabón has so far added.
