Tijuana.- The Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) has the necessary tools so that students who are medical students and do their internship, can report the irregularities that occur in it, said Dr. Julieta Yadira Lemon Islands, director of the Faculty of Psychology and Medicine.
“Teaching in hospitals is regulated and has a legal basis that describes this type of activity: that the student will be in a regular schedule of 8 hours from Monday to Friday, complementary clinical practices will be assigned in roles ABC or ABCD with a duration of 16 hours, all this is defined in the General Health Law, in the State Health Law and specifically in the official Mexican standard 234, which was a rule that was authorized in 2003, “he said. explain.
Sometimes, long days on duty during boarding schools are applied as punishment to medical students, the principal mentioned, so in these situations the university intervenes and dialogues with the hospital director.
“When the university makes these collaborations with health institutions we are abiding by this type of situation, this does not mean that we do not have interference. When we detect that there is some irregular situation where the guard is used as punishment, that has happened, we approach the director of the hospital and review what is happening with this service (…) The regular guard allows 8 hours a day, and those who call them guards are a maximum of 16 hours, this is what the authorizes norm, ”he noted.
The UABC has provided the facilities for students to report these cases of overexposure in extended days, added Lemon Islands, after that, they carry out the necessary research.
“It has worked for us to report the cases with a QR code, which in several places we send them, with their tutors or by e-mail, they give us a report of facts and we follow up to be able to solve it,” he said. .

For the director of the Faculty of Psychology and Medicine it is important that students are aware that the university institution supports them in such cases, as even some students have mentioned that a complaint about their internship, may affect the their acceptance into another hospital when required to perform their residency.
“Students are getting stronger to make complaints, one of the important things is that they see the support of the institution and their school, and that there is finally a favorable response in what they ask, I understand that there may be a kind of fear, but the faculty supports them in all this kind of management, ”he concluded.
