NEW YORK – Mets general manager Zach Scott faces driving charges under the influence of alcohol. in Westchester County, New York, the team learned Wednesday morning. Scott will not travel with the Mets on the next tour while club officials investigate the incident and determine the next steps.
The Mets issued a statement saying: “We were surprised and highly disappointed to learn this morning of the charges facing Zack Scott. We will take the matter very seriously.”
The Mets hired Scott as assistant general manager in December, to work under baseball operations president Jared Porter and team president Sandy Alderson. After the team fired Porter, Scott began taking charge of baseball operations on an interim basis.
Until last month, the team had not decided whether to remove the interim label from Scott’s place. They didn’t want to make any decisions until the end of the season.
The New York Post was the first media outlet to report details of the incident, which took place Tuesday morning, when police found Scott sleeping in his car in White Plains, New York. ESPN reported that Scott had been at the home of Mets owner Steve Cohen a few hours earlier at a charity event.
