The Chamber of Deputies of Mexico approved this Tuesday the reform of the National Security Law that removes the immunity of the foreign agents in the country, an initiative presented by the Government to limit the movements of the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and with this endorsement will be sent for enactment.
With 329 votes a favor, 98 against and 40 abstentions, the Chamber of Deputies ratified the reform approved last week by the Senate, which was sent to the Executive for its enactment and entry into force.
The initiative obliges agents from other countries to share their information cwhere the Mexican authorities, prohibiting them from arresting people, demand them one authorization paragraph carry weapons, establish that they do not have judicial immunity and threatens expulsion of agencies if they break the law.
While the initiative affects any foreign official with police activity in Mexico, is a response from the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the activities of the DEA.
Research in Cienfuegos
Last October, López Obrador expressed his displeasure at not being informed of the DEA’s investigation against General Salvador Cienfuegos, which led to his capture in Los Angeles (USA) for alleged links to the United States drug trafficking when he led the Army during the Government of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).
After intense negotiation, the Mexican government closed in November an unpublished agreement with the Administration out of Donald Trump to bring charges against Cienfuegos, who returned to Mexico at large while the Prosecutor’s Office investigate your case.
Subsequently, López Obrador he urgently sent this initiative to Congress to defend the “sovereignty” of Mexico.

The most controversial episode in the presence of the DEA in Mexico was Operation Legend of 1985, when American agents captured on their own several drug traffickers such as response to the murder of his companion Enrique Camarena.
As part of this operation, the DEA arrested the doctor Humberto Alvarez Machín, accused to participate in murder of Camarena, and secretly transferred him to El Paso, Texas violating the extradition laws.
López Obrador finally recognized the victory for Joe Biden in the US elections of last month and sent him on Monday night a congratulatory letter after the Electoral College of that country ratified him as president-elect. EFE
