Mexico closed a tourist site in the ruins of Yucatan due to an increase in visitors without masks, according to The Associated Press.

Authorities are closing the site of the Mayan ruin of Chichen Itza from April 1 to 4 in an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, AP reported.

The news media noted that the temple complex usually attracts 1.8 million tourists a year.

Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, acting police chief of the state of Quintana Roo, told AP that it was “unfortunate” to see how badly they had put themselves in the area.

“It’s unfortunate to see how things have become unruly,” he told AP. “It was really frustrating to see hundreds of people walking around without face masks.”

He added that tourists were the “worst criminals.”

AP also reported that the multi-day ceremony of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ will be held in Mexico City without spectators for the second year in a row, citing the risk of the pandemic.

The news comes a day after Mexico passed 200,000 coronavirus deaths on Thursday, according to Reuters.

A count of Johns Hopkins University the country’s death toll stands at 200,211 as of Friday afternoon.

The death toll in Mexico is subsequent to Brazil, which has recorded 303,462 deaths, and in the United States, which has recorded 546,822 deaths.

Mexico has recorded more than 2.2 million coronavirus infections since the pandemic began.
