Miami Beach’s iconic bar is temporarily closed to protect staff after wild spring break nights

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach companies take the safety of their employees and their customers into their own hands. On Friday, Clevelander’s restaurant and bar announced they will close until at least next week for security reasons due to the crowded wild vacation.

The iconic Clevelander issued a note to employees Friday afternoon assuring them they will pay in full during the temporary closure.

“The situation has gotten worse enough because we don’t feel comfortable asking our employees to come to work,” explains Clevelander attorney Alexander Tachmes. He says they will meet next week to re-evaluate the closure.

Miami Beach police say they are doing everything they can to keep people safe as the spring break has caused violence and chaos on the streets of South Beach.

News of the rising police patrol comes less than a day after a street body on Ocean Drive, between Eighth and Ninth Streets, prompted police officers to shoot pepper balls to disperse a crowd and South Beach. Officers detained at least three people, and Miami Beach Fire Rescue staff responded to help the few injured.

“Officers from Miami-Dade, Coral Gables, Miami Gardens, we even have the correctional department here to help us transport the detainees back to jail,” Rodriguez explains. “Along our roads, we have received additional support from the Florida Highway Patrol.”

According to officials, temporarily closing MacArthur Road is a possibility in the near future if the situation in Miami Beach escalates over the weekend.

“What starts out as seemingly peaceful is growing rapidly and unfortunately people are getting hurt,” Rodriguez says.

“We put in place measures to curb any criminal activity, tame crowds and encourage people who are there to behave responsibly,” Rodriguez explains. “If not, the message is clear: he will be arrested.”
