The retired Michigan Congressman left the Republican Party on Monday and said he was becoming independent in protest of his former party’s attempts to overthrow Biden’s victory as president.
Triton’s representative Paul Mitchell is nearing the end of his second and final term. Wrote the same day letter to Republican National Committee Chairman Ronna McDonnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy Voters formalized Mr Biden’s victory.
“It is unacceptable for political candidates to regard our electoral system as a third world nation and to provoke distrust in fundamental matters such as the sanctity of our votes,” he said.
Mr. Mitchell said he voted despite some reservations about another four years of Trump’s leadership. He criticized GOP leaders for tolerating “unsubstantiated conspiracy theories” without safeguarding a secure electoral process. He did not join the 106 House Republicans who signed one of the Texas lawsuits – Rejected by the Supreme Court – This does not apply to results in Michigan and three other states.
“I believe that it is not the original political views on constitutional or voting integrity that motivate many in the party leadership to support efforts to ‘stop stealing’, which is very disappointing to me,” Mitchell wrote. “As elected members of Congress, we swear to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States’ and not to protect or defend the political interests of any individual, whether it is the President or anyone else, a nation that harms our loved ones.”
“As a result, I am writing to advise both of you to refrain from my engagement and contact with the Republicans at the national and state levels,” Mitchell added. “… I also request that the Secretary of the House of Representatives change my party affiliation with Independence for the remainder of my term of office. As agreed, we all know that symbols are important.”
